Winston introduced its first-generation fly rods with Boron in 1998. Now with our new third and second-generation Boron III and Boron II rod designs (Boron IIIx, Boron II-MX and Boron IIt), Winston is the leading fly rod company in designing extraordinary lightweight and quick, responsive high-performance fly rods utilizing this amazing material.

Boron is five times as strong and twice as stiff as steel, yet lighter than aluminum; it lets us add stability and up to 25% more strength to graphite enabling us to significantly reduce weight over comparable graphite rod models.

Winston’s utilization of new Boron III and Boron II materials and designs has enabled us to achieve unprecedented levels of performance. Our new Boron IIIx, Boron II-MX, and Boron IIt rod series as well as our new Boron II Two-Handed fly rod series rods are now regarded as the most innovative, most responsive and extraordinarily powerful fly rods in the world. Now, from fast-action through traditional-action, the new Boron III and Boron II material and designs enable us to provide an unprecedented combination of delicacy, power and extraordinary light weight. In the same way that parabolic skis transformed skiing, Boron III and II have revolutionized Winston fly rod design.

Here is an overview of how Boron III and II is utilized for each of our new performance rod series:

Our new Boron IIIx Series rods use stronger and higher modulus Boron III material. This not only allowed us to reduce weight, but also enabled us to incorporate elements into the rod design we've never before been able to do in terms of providing as much power as you need (via incredible line speed) to handle long distances and significant winds, as well as the ability to make delicate presentations up close. These all-around rods load quickly and give the angler unprecedented control over line speed for a very broad casting range (25 ft up to 110+ft) to cover virtually any fishing situation. The rods are fast action rods and yet, unlike other fast action rods, are still a delight to cast with our celebrated smooth Winston Action.Comes with our new beautiful deep Winston Green graphite rod tube. These are the finest all-around fly rods we have ever made (offered in 3-weight through 10-weight).

Our Boron IIt Series offers an innovative design blending technology with tradition. The result is a smooth-casting yet highly responsive medium-action rod that is perfect for dry fly fishing or light nymphing. We only make these Boron IIt rods in lighter, trout models (3-weight through 5-weight). They are incredibly smooth and provide a fresh, more modern/high-tech updating of our famed “Winston Action.” The Boron in these rods, however, also gives these rods a controlled power and liveliness unlike any graphite rods made.

Our Boron II-MX Series rods are significantly faster action rods and are definitely the stiffest and most powerful rods we make. The strength and weight advantages of Boron II are so significant, they are arguably the best balanced and most lightweight powerful fly rods ever made. You will definitely feel the power when you cast these rods. The stronger mid and butt sections in particular allow you to carry more line in the air, lift more line off the water and cast longer distances even in heavy winds. Designed for those who prefer a faster action with more muscle, the Boron II-MX offers tremendous power and control for both saltwater and freshwater applications (offered 4-weight through 12-weight).
